Introduction
In the 2004 Super Bowl the first-seeded New England Patriots beat the third-seeded Carolina Panthers by three points to win their second NFL championship. 2010 featured the top-ranked New Orleans Saints earning their franchises first Super Bowl win. In the 10 seasons since the NFLs last re-alignment (before the 2002 season) these are the only two times a #1 seed has won the big game. It seems pretty odd that the top seeds, teams which only have to win two home games to make it to the big game, are only batting .200.
Theres obviously a lot of potential reasons for this discrepancy. One that tends to get mentioned frequently is the first-round bye given to the top two seeds. The logic goes that the week off, rather than helping a team rest up and prepare for the Divisional round, somehow hurts them, possibly by disrupting the natural rhythm of the week.
Ive showed that on average the home team wins about 57% of the time during meaningful games of the regular season. If the bye week is the cause of this Super Bowl drought then it seems reasonable that we should find that the first and second seeds are winning their home playoff games at a lower frequency than expected.
Data
A list of the seeding of the teams in the last 10 Super Bowls is all thats necessary for this experiment, so I simply made the list by hand from Wikipedia, which has fairly comprehensive coverage of each years playoffs.Wikipedia also has a comprehensive page on the Monte Carlo method, but in short it works by repeatedly generating random realizations of the problem at hand and comparing the results of the randomized trials to the real data. Given enough runs, the Monte Carlo method should converge to a stable result, allowing us to see if the assumptions that went into the Monte Carlo simulation are valid statistical representations of reality.
The Monte Carlo algorithm was set up to predict the expected number of Super Bowl appearances for each seed, under the assumptions that home field advantage was a flat 57% and that the different rankings of the teams had no bearing on game outcomes. No additional advantage from the bye week was programmed into the model.
Results
The number of Super Bowl appearances for each seed (AFC and NFC seeds combined) is shown in Table 1. Note that even a 7% home-field advantage results in an additional ~1.5 Super Bowl appearances per decade for the #1 seeds than if there was no home field advantage (with no home field advantage both the #1 and 2 seeds each make it to 5 out of 10 Super Bowls, as would be expected).| Seed | Predicted # of Appearances | Actual # of Appearances | Predicted # of Wins | Actual # of Wins |

The standard deviations of all the results are listed next to each predicted value; the relatively small sample of Super Bowls results in fairly large margins of error in the simulation.
Regardless, its pretty clear that the extra bye week isnt hampering the first two seeds from getting to the championship. The #2 seed has made almost as many appearances as predicted, while the #1 seed is, if anything, reaching the Super Bowl more often than they should be.
Because I was interested, I also computed the number of times each seed wins the Super Bowl. For this calculation I made the additional assumption that there is no home field advantage in the Super Bowl, which seemed reasonable given that the game is held on neutral ground. Those results are also presented in Table 1.
Discussion and Conclusions
The errors are fairly large, but the overall match between the model and the data indicates that there is neither an extra advantage or disadvantage to having the bye (although there is tantalizing � but not quite significant �evidence that #1 seeds arent winning as many Super Bowls as they should). Without a larger sample size, however, any firm conclusions would be premature.Unfortunately, when it comes to the Super Bowl you only get one new data point a year, so its going to be quite awhile before the signal may stand out from the noise. One interesting note to mull over while waiting for more data: in the first five of the post-realignment playoffs, a #1 seed reached the Super Bowl all five years. Since then, only three top seeds have made it to the big game, while the last three Super Bowl winners were all ranked 4th or lower.

The popularity of iPhones cant be ignored and with its marketing heavily promoting its compatibility with Microsoft Exchange, users think they have all the info they need to insist that their iPhone should operate flawlessly with their employers email server. In reality, an organization needs more than just a single Exchange server to serve the iPhone users in the most secure fashion. A front-end server will get you up an running easily, but what if you only have a single Exchange server?
The reason a single server model doesnt work is because ActiveSync doesnt work with forms-based authentication and SSL. (In reality, this is a fix for all ActiveSync devices, not just for iPhones). There is a workaround, however:
Note: This process will interrupt Outlook Web Access service. Be sure to plan accordingly, though it should take very long to complete these steps.
1. On the Exchange 2003 server, open the System Manager.
2. Expand Administrative Groups > (first group listed) > Servers > (your Exchange server) > Protocols > HTTP.
3. Right-click "Exchange Virtual Server" and select "Properties"
4. Click the Settings tab and uncheck "Enable Forms Based Authentication. Click OK and close System Manager.
5. Restart IIS.
- Option 1: From Computer Mangement, right-click "Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager" and go to All Tasks > Restart IIS...
- Option 2: Go to Start > Run.. and enter: IISRESET /NOFORCE
7. Right-click the "Exchange" virtual directory, go to All Tasks > Save Configuration to a File...
8. For a File Name, you can use whatever you want (ExchangeVDir is in Microsofts example).
9. Right-click "Default Web Site" and select New > Virtal Directory (from file).
10. Click "Browse" and locate the file you created in step 8, click "Open" and then "Read File.
11. Under "Select a configuration to import" click "Exchange" and then OK.
12. A message will indicate that the directory already exists, so select "Create a new virtual directory" and type "exchange-oma" in the "Alias" box. Click OK.
13. Right-click the "exchange-oma" virtual directory and select "Properties."
14. Go to the Directory Security tab and click the Edit button under "Authentication and access control."
15. Make sure only Integrated Windows authentication and Basic authentication are enabled. Click OK.
16. Under the Directory Security tab, click the Edit button under "IP address and domain name restrictions."
17. Select "Denied access," click "Add," click "Single computer" and enter the IP address of your Exchange server (the one youre making all these changes on). Click OK twice.
18. Under "Secure communications" click the "Edit" button and verify that "Require secure channel (SSL) is not enabled. Click OK.
19. Close IIS Manager.
20. In the registry, browse to this location:

21. Right-click "Parameters," click New > String Value.
22. Type "ExchangeVDir" (without quotes and exactly as capitalized). Then modify "ExchangeVDir" and give it a value of "/exchange-oma" (again, without the quotes).
23. Restart IIS (see Step 5).
24. Re-enable forms-based authentication for Outlook Web Access, if desired, by re-checking the box in steps 1-4.
25. Restart IIS once again and you should be able to connect to your Exchange server using Activesync! If you see some glitches, try restarting the server.

Today sees yet another bastardization of H. C. Becks London Underground map. londonist.com report on a new tube map showing Olympic medal winners.
Now even TfL have got in on the act with an "if you cant beat them, join them" attitude for this latest version is an official product, available as a limited edition through their online shop. As those who know me will already know...I am an avid fan of Becks map. I am also a fan of some of the original uses of it as a vehicle for other, re-engineered purposes (e.g. The Great Bear, 1992) but the time has come to say enough is enough. Its also the last straw and I am hereby announcing a forthcoming paper penned by myself and William Cartwright on this very issue...
