McCreary and McCarthy

Two quick news items pointed out to me by Adam Whitehead. One, Bear McCreary, the composer for Battlestar Galactica, was a popular fan choice to score Game of Thrones. A Thrones fan relayed this interest to McCreary on his blog and this is what McCreary had to say:

Yeah, I�m aware of that series. It would be fun to score, wouldn�t it? Well, some vocal fans would always make any attempt easier.

Well, I certainly did tons of Arabic inspired music on BSG, Medieval and Renaissance would be fun I guess, although harmonically that music is pretty limited. But, no one from Game of Thrones is banging down my door at the moment, so don�t anyone get their hopes up here. :)

Also, it looks like Tom McCarthy has moved on to his next project. He will again be behind the camera, this time directing an indie film entitled Win Win. The filming is scheduled to start in late February.

Winter Is Coming: No idea whether they are even looking to hire a composer at this point. It is likely that HBO will wait until they decide whether or not to pick up the show before looking for a composer. Most of the time the pilots that execs watch are pretty bare bones, with just a minimum amount of post-production work done on them. I would imagine music is something that could wait until a series pick up. Hopefully they will look at McCreary when the time comes, as I think he would be a solid choice.

And its nice to see that McCarthy is continuing to further his directing career. It remains to be seen whether the timing of filming for his indie would alter the time line for Game of Thrones season one filming (if there is any). We still dont know whether McCarthy will be back as director of subsequent episodes or not, so his involvement with Thrones may completely end prior to Feb. In which case, his indie film project wont have any effect on the schedule for Thrones.
